Protecting hardware,
preventing downtime

Servers, switches, and control technology are expensive, sensitive, and indispensable – their greatest invisible enemy is humidity. DÖLCO keeps the climate in data centers, server rooms, and technical rooms permanently within the safe range: stationary systems, demand-controlled via ITR and monitored 24/7 via KISS.

The problem

Both too damp and too dry cause damage

In technical rooms, it is not just the temperature that determines the service life of the hardware, but above all the humidity – and both too much and too little cause expensive damage.

Too damp: condensation & corrosion
If the surface of components, circuit paths, or connectors drops below the dew point, water condenses – leading to corrosion on contacts and circuit boards, leakage currents, and mold, often unnoticed until failure occurs.
Too dry: electrostatic discharge (ESD)
Dry air promotes electrostatic charging. A single spark when replacing hardware can destroy sensitive semiconductors – ESD is one of the most common causes of failure for integrated circuits.
Condensation in cool rooms
Server and technical rooms are often located in basements or are actively cooled. When warm, humid air meets cold walls, pipes, or housings, condensation forms – posing a risk to electronics, cabling, and the building structure.
Failure & data risk
Corroded contacts, ESD-damaged chips, and moisture on circuit boards lead to sporadic errors, unplanned downtime, and data loss – every hour of downtime costs money and trust.

The solution

Keeping humidity within the safe window

DÖLCO brings humidity to the level where hardware operates safely – and keeps it there, automatically and monitored. The systems work quietly in the background and are regulated based on demand.

Protecting hardware,
40–60% relative humidity
The systems keep humidity constantly within the window recommended by ASHRAE – where neither condensation nor electrostatic discharge becomes critical.
Protection against condensate & ESD
The room air remains above the dew point of the coldest surfaces (no condensation) and at the same time above the ESD-critical dry limit – neutralizing both causes of failure.
ITR – demand-controlled
The dew point control activates dehumidification exactly when the humidity level requires it – this saves energy and prevents over-drying.
KISS monitoring & alarm
Temperature and humidity are seamlessly documented in real-time; those responsible are alerted as soon as values approach the thresholds – without needing to be in the room.

Expertise

The right humidity window

For IT and data center environments, ASHRAE (TC 9.9) recommends operation at 40–60% relative humidity; the broader permissible range extends from 20 to 80% depending on the equipment class, but is associated with higher risks. The recommended corridor balances the opposing dangers – over-drying on one side, and condensation and corrosion on the other.

Relative humidity is directly dependent on temperature: warm air holds much more water than cold air. The same absolute amount of water results in a much higher relative humidity in a cool basement technical room than in the heated office next door. The deciding factor is not just the room temperature, but the gap between the surface temperature of the hardware and the dew point of the air – this is exactly where dew point-controlled regulation comes in.

Too damp means condensation, corrosion, and leakage currents; too dry means increased electrostatic charging with ESD damage to components that fail even at low voltages. An effective solution therefore regulates in both directions and integrates into the existing air conditioning: cooling maintains the temperature, while dehumidification maintains the humidity. The design is based on room volume, heat load, fresh air ratio, and construction type; DÖLCO integrates the system into monitored continuous operation via ITR and KISS.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is the optimal humidity for a server room?
ASHRAE recommends 40–60% relative humidity for IT environments. Within this window, neither condensation nor electrostatic discharge is critical. DÖLCO systems keep this range permanently stable.
Isn't the air conditioning enough?
An air conditioning system primarily maintains the temperature and only dehumidifies as a side effect – uncontrollably and often insufficiently, especially in cool or basement-level rooms. Dedicated dehumidification with dew point control specifically complements the cooling.
How does this protect against both corrosion and ESD at the same time?
Excessive humidity leads to condensation and corrosion, while too little leads to static charging. By keeping the humidity constantly in the middle window (40–60%), both risks are avoided simultaneously.
Why do walls and hardware sweat in the technical room?
Condensation occurs when warm, humid air meets surfaces that are colder than the dew point – typical in cooled or basement rooms. Dehumidification lowers the dew point to a level where no more water precipitates.
Can I monitor the values remotely?
Yes. With KISS, you can see temperature and humidity in real-time, receive automatic documentation, and be alerted as soon as values approach critical thresholds – across all locations.
