The problem

Humidity as a risk for batch & compliance

Wherever hygroscopic substances, sterile processes, and tight specifications are involved, uncontrolled air humidity is a direct risk factor – even minor deviations can jeopardize an entire batch.

Over 60 % promotes germs
Humid air creates ideal conditions for germs, bacteria, and mold – an immediate hygiene and contamination risk in cleanrooms and production areas.
Hygroscopic substances absorb water
Active ingredients, granulates, and tableting compounds absorb moisture, clump together, and lose flowability; some substances deliquesce above their critical humidity level.
Fluctuating humidity disrupts quality
Reproducible results require constant conditions – if humidity fluctuates, active ingredient content, tablet hardness, drying behavior, and test results fluctuate as well.
Condensation on cold surfaces
Moisture settles on cooled pipes, tanks, and equipment – causing corrosion, dripping water, germ reservoirs, and an avoidable hygiene risk.

The solution

Defined humidity as a quality basis

DÖLCO keeps the relative air humidity permanently and controlled at the target value – the fundamental prerequisite for low-germ, low-particle, and reproducible production.

Consistently low humidity,
Constant, low humidity
Stationary systems of the K- and T-series maintain the defined humidity level stably – regardless of outside weather, occupancy, or process load.
Product & process protection
Hygroscopic substances remain free-flowing and stable, condensation is avoided, and the basis for germ growth is removed – reducing rejects and batch losses.
ITR – demand-controlled
The dew point control monitors humidity and temperature and only activates dehumidification when the setpoint requires it – specifically preventing condensation and saving energy.
KISS documentation
The KISS platform automatically logs humidity and operating data in real-time – a reliable data basis for GMP-relevant monitoring and verification.

Expertise

Why constant humidity counts

Microorganisms need water. As relative air humidity increases – especially above approximately 60 % – the risk of microbial colonization of surfaces, materials, and air grows. In cleanrooms, humidity control is therefore one of the climate variables that must be constantly monitored alongside particle filtration and temperature management; constant environmental conditions are part of quality assurance.

Many active ingredients and excipients are hygroscopic: they bind water vapor from the ambient air. The consequences range from clumping and poorer flowability to altered tableting properties and loss of stability. Certain substances absorb water rapidly above a critical relative humidity and deliquesce. Controlled, low humidity keeps them below this threshold.

Dehumidification is not an isolated add-on, but is integrated into the existing HVAC and cleanroom concept – coordinated with supply air, temperature control, and filter stages. For moderate setpoints, condensation technology works efficiently; for very low dew points and continuous operation, adsorption technology is used. Which technology is suitable depends on room volume, air exchange, and target climate – DÖLCO designs based on the specific project.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What air humidity is appropriate in a cleanroom?
This depends on the process and the substances being processed. Hygroscopic active ingredients and sterile areas often require significantly less than 60 % RH, sometimes considerably lower. DÖLCO determines the target value and system design on a project-specific basis.
Why is humidity above 60 % a problem?
Above this range, the risk of microbial growth increases significantly, and hygroscopic substances absorb more water – both jeopardize hygiene, product quality, and process stability.
Can the system be integrated into cleanroom technology?
Yes. The dehumidification is coordinated with the existing HVAC and cleanroom concept and complements temperature control and filtration with controlled humidity regulation.
Does DÖLCO support GMP documentation?
The KISS platform logs humidity and operating data automatically and in real-time – these seamless records provide a reliable data basis for GMP-relevant monitoring.
Condensation or adsorption?
For moderate setpoints, condensation technology works efficiently. For very low dew points, low temperatures, or continuous operation, adsorption technology is the right choice – DÖLCO decides based on process requirements.
