Solution · Warehouse & Logistics

Dry storage,
protected goods

Humid air is the most expensive stowaway in any warehouse: it causes metal to rust, packaging to soften, and stored goods to "sweat" – often unnoticed until the damage is done. DÖLCO keeps the humidity in halls, logistics centers, and outdoor warehouses permanently in the safe range. Stationary systems Made in Freiburg.

The problem

What humidity does to a warehouse

Humidity fluctuates with every door opening, every temperature change, and every new batch. If it exceeds the critical range, an invisible process begins that attacks the value of goods, machinery, and infrastructure.

Corrosion on goods & machinery
When moisture settles on metal, a thin electrolyte film forms – the basis for rust. This affects stored goods, plant equipment, conveyor technology, and the hall structure.
Stored goods "sweating"
If goods cool down at night and meet warmer, humid hall air in the morning, the surface temperature drops below the dew point – condensation forms directly on the goods, especially with pallets delivered cold.
Mold & mildew stains
At permanently high humidity (from approx. 70%), mold spores find ideal conditions. Cardboard boxes warp and lose stacking strength; textiles and labels develop mildew stains.
Rust on metal parts & spare parts
Bare components, tools, and semi-finished products develop flash rust long before they are installed – leading to expensive rework, special packaging, or the scrapping of costly components.

The solution

Address the cause, not the symptom

Instead of fighting damage after the fact, DÖLCO systems keep the humidity constantly below the critical threshold – fully automatic, demand-controlled, and designed for continuous operation.

Dry storage,
Constant storage humidity
Hygrostat-controlled regulation keeps the humidity level permanently in the target range (typically 45–55% RH) – regardless of door openings, weather, or day/night cycles.
Corrosion protection without special packaging
Keeping the air dry saves on desiccant bags, VCI films, and shrink-wrapping. Metal parts are stored bare and ready for use – reducing packaging and handling costs.
ITR – demand-controlled
The control system monitors humidity, temperature, and dew point, activating dehumidification only when needed – this avoids over-drying and keeps consumption low.
KISS – monitoring & remote access
Live values, trends, and alarms in case of limit violations, available remotely if desired – turning "hopefully dry" into documented proof.

Expertise

Corrosion, dew point & reference values

Atmospheric corrosion of steel requires a thin film of water on the metal surface that acts as an electrolyte. This film only forms above a critical relative humidity – for bare steel at around 60%. Above this, the corrosion rate rises steeply; below it (at about 50% or less), the rusting process practically comes to a standstill. Salts and dirt can shift this threshold downwards – a reason to maintain a safety margin.

Relative humidity alone does not explain condensation damage. The decisive factor is the ratio of surface temperature to the dew point: if a component or pallet cools below the dew point of the air, water condenses directly on it – even if the room air appears only moderately humid. Classic case: cold-delivered goods meet warm hall air. Keeping humidity low lowers the dew point and removes the basis for this effect.

For dry storage, a target corridor of about 45–55% RH is considered robust – low enough to prevent corrosion and mold without unnecessary over-drying. The method depends on the temperature: in temperature-controlled halls, condensation drying is the most economical; in cool outdoor and cold storage areas with a low dew point, adsorption drying shows its strength. DÖLCO dimensions systems based on hall volume, air exchange, and moisture load.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is the ideal humidity for a warehouse?
For dry, corrosion- and mold-proof storage, 45–55% relative humidity has proven effective. Below about 50%, steel corrosion practically comes to a standstill; from around 70%, the risk of mold increases. DÖLCO systems keep the target value constant.
Why do my goods "sweat" even though the hall seems dry?
Because it is not the room air that is decisive, but the surface temperature. If goods cool below the dew point of the hall air, water condenses directly on them. Keeping humidity low lowers the dew point and prevents exactly this.
Is a system worth it compared to desiccants?
Generally, yes. Desiccant bags, VCI films, and shrink-wrapping cause ongoing costs per part. Centralized dehumidification keeps the entire warehouse dry – metal parts remain bare and ready for use, and packaging effort is permanently reduced.
Does dehumidification work in cold warehouses?
Yes. In temperature-controlled halls, condensation drying is the most economical; for refrigerated, cold, and outdoor warehouses, DÖLCO offers adsorption dryers that dehumidify reliably even at low temperatures and low dew points.
How do I keep track of the warehouse climate across multiple locations?
Via KISS: Live values, trends, and alarms in case of limit violations, with remote access. This ensures the warehouse climate is documented at all times – important for quality-sensitive goods and audits.
